This biography was written by Edmund Gosse in1886. He sticks very close to his subject. Thus we learn very little about events in which Raleigh did not play a prominent part. Thus we learn little about the Spanish Armada, and little about the attempted settlement in Virginia with which his name is commonly associated, since although he played a major part in promoting the attempts, he never went there himself.Raleigh's exploits as sailor, soldier, courtier and poet are recounted. His role in the attack on Cadiz and his first visit to the mouths of the Orinoco are awarded some detail. His enmity to the Spaniards and the Irish are contrased with his amicable dealings with the Orinoco Indians.
He was at times a close courtier of Queen Elizabeth I, but his relations with james I we re always bad, and ultimately costhim his head. His "History of the world" was so detailed that he never got as far as what would now be accepted as history.
