Whosoever Shall Offend F Marion Francis Marion 18 Crawford 9781373144096 Books
This is a novel about a murderer and a peasant girl who saves the life of one of his intended victims. Folco Corbario marries a wealthy widow, and all of society suspects he is out for her money. But years go by and all goes well between the two. Her son, the frail and sickly Marcello, is in love with Aurora. Seeing his chance, Corbario poisons his wife and attemps to beat Marcello to death during a storm. But Marcello is rescued by the peasant girl Regina, who nurses him back to health. Marcello falls in love with her, proposes marriage to her, but she, knowing of Aurora, nobly rejects him. Marcello also comes to realize his love for her is only motivated by a desire to repay her kindness in tending to him during his recovery. Regina becomes ill, and Aurora visits her; they both acknowledge the love they have for Marcello. Regina dies (ever so conveniently) knowing that Marcello would have married her had Aurora not had previous claims. Corbario is caught and sent to prison. As in most of Crawford's novels, there are good things and bad. The disappearance of Marcello is handled intriguingly, though the introduction of the poison as the murder weapon is too pat. Regina, however, is the best thing about this novel; she is the kind of character that Crawford relished in creating. Self-sacrificing, idealistic, honest, but still a life-and-blood character and never just a romanticized figment of the imagination, Regina captures the reader's attention; when she is not on the scene we miss her and long for her return. Without her, the novel would be forgettable; with her, it's a pretty decent novel.
